CONCEPT/INSPIRATION: Ardith Ibañez Nishii, Arlene Ibañez, & Tanya Loh
"Nanay" means "mother" in Tagalog. It’s how we refer to our grandmother, Rosalina "Lina" Santos Jacinto, who helped to raise us. She was a strong, stubborn, industrious, resourceful, loving, and hysterical woman. She spent her time gardening, cooking (making sure we were never hungry), writing letters, match-making for us, and generally ruling over her family (we also called her "The Godfather").
Tanya came up with the "Nanay Knows Best" phrase after seeing Nanay’s little pillow with a phrase embroidered on it, "Thank heavens for Grandma." Nanay had this pillow with her during her last days in the hospital. We brought it back to the United States with us after her death. Needless to say, she continues to be a role model and inspiration to us.
